Offenses are out of control this season and Week 5 appears to be no different with six games coming in with a Vegas total over 50 points, including four on Sunday’s main slate plus a couple more in the high 40s.
Something I also look at is are correlations plays. For example a low scoring game and a heavy favorite equals playing a RB and DEF together so that you max out the points in that scenario.
Here are my Picks for Beat the Expert Week 5
Melvin Gordon ($8600): Gordon has been nothing short of brilliant in the first quarter of this season. He ranks fifth in yards from scrimmage (475), tied for fourth in rushing and already have plus five receiving touchdowns to go with his 6.0 receptions per game.
Gordon should absolutely feast on Oakland’s run defense who allows that’s a gashing 5.69 yards per carry to running backs this year. Chargers have a team over/under total (29.5 points) that’s tied for the highest of the week. It’s a no brainer.
Antonio Brown ($9100): is a great spot for Brown. We still haven’t seen one of those big ceiling games and this should be the week against the Falcons at home. Brown is averaging over 13 targets per game and has scored in three of four contests. He is just lacking the big plays that could come this week against a Falcons defense that has allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to opposing WRs this year.
Feeling Contrarian?
Matthew Stafford (5700): Stafford has bounced back since his horrible week 1 during Monday Night Football where he threw four interceptions. Since then he’s thrown seven touchdowns to just one interception and has surpassed 300 yards passing twice.
The Packers are a middle of the road defensive matchup. Football Outsiders (FO) ranks them 10th defending the pass this season.
Stafford’s recent history against the Packers in the four meetings, he’s surpassed 320 yards passing with multiple touchdown passes in each of his last four meetings. This game projects to be a shootout with an over/under total of 51 points and the Packers favored by just one point.
