There’s a little rain hitting the East Coast tonight, which could cause delays in Washington and both New York home games. The bigger question mark is down south in Monterrey, Mexico, where the Padres are hosting the Dodgers. It’s worth keeping an eye on the forecast throughout the day — Monterrey is more than 2,000 feet above sea level, which should give hitters an advantage once they get the game in.
Andrelton Simmons ($3700): The 28-year-old seems to have taken yet another step in his development as one of the best all-around shortstops in the game, coming into today with a career high batting average (.337), walk rate (8.6%) and OPS (.901). Simmons has scored 21 runs in 29 games with three homers, 19 RBI and three stolen bases. He’ll square off against Mike Leake, he of the 6.48 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. Simmons is 7-for-18 against the Seattle righty with a home run and two doubles.
J.A. Happ ($5100): Happ is off to a 4-1 start and rocking an astounding 12.50 K/9, which ranks sixth in the majors. The lefty is a full four K’s/9 over his career average, but he’s also walking guys at a career-low rate of 1.75/9. Career resurgence at age 35? Probably not, but Happ is just two years removed from winning 20 games for the Blue Jays. He’s up against a weak lineup in a pitcher’s park, backed by an excellent offense and bullpen. Of the Rays regulars, only Carlos Gomez has had any sort of success against Happ, and that was a different Carlos Gomez.
