Last week we hit it big, with Cole Hamels (Win, 7 innings, 0 earned runs, 7 strikeouts) and Nolan Arenado (3 hits including a homer and a double, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and we are looking to continue that success this week.
Derek Holland ($4,200). Yes, I cringed when I wrote that name, but the matchup is reasonably perfect. Look, you could go with chalk and spend the money on Corey Kluber, James Paxton, Luis Severino, David Price, Charlie Morton or even Jon Lester, but if you were doing that, you wouldn’t be reading this. The Rockies are hitting .229 on the road, with an OPS of .683. Holland hasn’t given up more than 3 earned runs in a game in June. He’s not going to get you eye popping numbers, but a quality start, a win, and a decent game are yours for the asking, and you can use the savings to pick up a pair of stud hitters to set you apart from the masses.
J.D. Martinez ($7,000). Time to use that savings. Martinez is white-hot, hitting .400 in his last seven games and .368 over his past 15. The Angels are throwing John Lamb as the “opener,” meaning that it’s a bullpen day. The Angels’ bullpen is a mess at the back end, and no better in the front or middle, so Martinez should have a field day.
