Here’s hoping you have a great and safe Fourth of July, and what better way to close out a weekend following such a holiday than chilling with a PGA tourney?
Well, with the Greenbrier Classic moving to The Old White TPC, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, that is exactly what we have. The Old White is on the longer side of the tour, checking in at 7286 yards. However, the course provides just a pair of fives — #12 at 568 and #17 at 616 yards — and three long threes (of a total of four) ranging from 205 to 234. The remaining fours — there are 12–average 439 yards, with a short of 385, but three blisteringly long holes ranking from 488 (#2) yards, to 492 (#11), to 493 (#13), though the 471 yard sixth hole ranks as the toughest on the course.
Of course I am going to look at the big hitters this time, but also also for GIR at 175 accuracy along with last year’s top finishers.
This week I’m playing the $1 Triple Up at FantasyDraft, a format I really like because they drop the low score from your seven-man roster ($100K cap) for the weekend, so sign up and see if you can beat me!
Before we look at my roster suggestions, the heat wave on the eastern seaboard might lift some, but it will be overcast, with some rain forecasted. Temps will generally be between 68-73 degrees, and a little breeze might well make for some pleasant days on the links.
Bubba Watson ($17,000): It is indeed fun to actually select players who are favorites, and if local knowledge is worth anything, than Watson, who is a member of the Greenbrier Sporting Club, is four-for-four at making the cut, averaging a score of 68.81, over a full stroke under par. Now all Bubba need do is deliver!
Phil Mickelson ($16,800): Phil is generally so good and steady (13 cuts made of 15 tries this year) that it is difficult to overlook him. The guy averages 131.86 FPPT, has six top tens along with a win and my endorsement.
Kevin Streelman ($14,700): Streelman has made 18 cuts over 21 tries, and ranks #3 overall in GIR between 150-175 yards nailing 193 shots of 267 tries, good for a 72.28% success rate.
Keegan Bradley ($14,500): Ranks #13 at GIR with a 70.32%, Bradley has made 15 of 18 cuts with three top 10s.
Joe Dahman ($12,600): Going towards the value picks, Dahman Ranks #4 in GIR at 72.16% nailing 140 of 194 shots. He has just one top 10, but is averaging 82.09 FPPT.
Michael Thompson ($11,600): With 124 of 172 GIR shots hitting the target, Thompson too makes a great vale selection at the Old White. He’s made nine of 13 cuts this season and is averaging 91.92 points per week.
