This week, I’m taking saving money on pitching, but going all out on the offensive side.
Cole Hamels ($4,800). Hamels has been slightly above average this season. He’s cheap and for the most part, you know what you are getting. There are sexier (albeit more expensive) options including Chris Sale and Justin Verlander, but you pay for what you get. If you are looking at the middle tier, look no further than Cole. Hamels is remarkably better on the road than at home (.209 BA/.250 BA; 1.16 WHIP/1.34 WHIP; 2.40 ERA/4.91 ERA) and equally as important, his K/9 on the road (10.67) is borderline elite. Royals hitters haven’t figured out Hamels (The four players with the most career at at bats are, with corresponding batting averages: Alcides Escobar .130; Lucas Duda .125; Sal Perez .143, and Alex Gordon .250, Mike Moustakas hasn’t gotten a hit in six at bats)
Nolan Arenado ($6,900). Since you saved money on the mound, it’s time to apply that savings. This one is almost unfair. Jason Vargas is a poor pitcher. He’s going in to Colorado where even good pitchers have difficulty. While the Rockies aren’t a great offensive team, Nolan Arenado is an amazing hitter. Arenado has been struggling a bit in June, with just 2 home runs in 57 at bats coming into Monday’s game. Those struggles will end by midnight Tuesday. Arenado is hitting .395 against lefties (.741 Slugging percentage and 1.236 OPS), with a home run every sixteen at bats. He’s incredibly good at home (.351 batting average, .622 SLG, 1.055 OPS). This one is money.
